City Skylines from Around the World: Anew Traveller Editors’ Collection
The streets of a city tell the story of its people, but the skyline of a city tells the story of the city itself — Anonymous
The editors of Anew Traveller share a collection of some of their favourite skylines from cities around the world.
New York, USA

My most recent travel venture took me to New York City, decidedly one of my absolute favourite urban destinations. Though the city is jam-packed with tourists at this time of year, at least there’s no shame to be felt in taking a ridiculous number of selfies and panoramic shots. This photo came after traversing the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset, a fantastic view in its own right. However it was upon arriving at Brooklyn’s shores, staring back at the last flicker of a sunset now outshone by those infamous city lights, that the real beauty of the city grabbed me. London, England

To me, London is a city of contrasts. Old and new, historical and contemporary. I think this photo over looking the Thames River at sunset sums that up perfectly. Despite the drastic differences in architectural styles, the colossal London Eye and surrounding skyscrapers appear to seamlessly compliment the neo-Gothic silhouettes of Westminster Palace and Big Ben. Kelowna, B.C., Canada

Nestled in the mountains of British Columbia in Canada is a place every hiker and wine lover should visit at least once. It’s hard not to find a good view in Kelowna, and when the sun is out and the sky is clear, head straight for the nearest mountain and climb. Credit: Nicola Brown
Athens, Greece

I spent just over 24 hours in Athens during a one month tour around Europe in 2013. It was just enough time for me to fall in love with the ancient city, but far too little time to get my fix of it (I’ll be back soon Athens, I promise!) I woke before dawn to be one of the first at the Acropolis. The view from the top was so worth the early morning climb. From above, Athens reminded me of a rolling wave crashing onto the shores of the surrounding mountains. And behind me, the Acropolis, well, that’s indescribable. Credit: Victoria Boyd.
Marrakech, Morocco

If I had to describe Marrakech in one word it would be chaos… beautiful chaos. The streets of the medina (old city) form an intricate maze packed with everything you can imagine — stores overflowing onto the streets, motobikes, bicycles, and donkeys, throngs of people weaving their way around each other. The pinky-coloured skyline of medina set against the Atlas mountains can be deceiving. The sounds of the busy hustle and bustle from the narrow streets below fail to reach the rooftops, giving the impression that Marrakech is a silent city. Credit: Victoria Boyd
Salento, Colombia

Sleepy Salento is a colourful little town in the heart of Colombia’s coffee country, oddly known for its trout, which is farmed nearby and loved by locals and visitors. Climb the seemingly endless stairs to this spot overlooking the bustling streets and you may just be met by some of Colombia’s most gorgeous hazy sunsets. Credit: Nicola Brown
Mbeya (Uyole), Tanzania

While Uyole’s skyline is much different than some of the others on this list, I’d argue it’s lack of grandeur is where its true beauty lies. Located in the Mbeya urban area of southwestern Tanzania, I spent 3 months based in Uyole, living at an orphanage and working with a local nonprofit organization called The Olive Branch for Children. This photo was taken on a day when several of the kids, after an exciting game of soccer, invited me to join them in climbing the nearby ‘mountain’. Though exhausted when I reached the top, it was well worth the view – the city below, and the smiling children beside me. Credit: Caitlin Boros
