Anew Traveller started the way many things do, as an idea being discussed by friends in a coffee shop. Though I didn’t yet understand how the blog would take shape, I couldn’t have been more eager to be a part of it.
For those who may not know, Anew is led and supported by some incredible women, whom it has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside, learn from, and share wild ideas with. We’ve also been extremely fortunate to feature some exceedingly talented guest writers, whose contributions have truly shaped the direction of Anew Traveller.
With one exciting year behind us, I can’t wait for what lies ahead. Let’s see where the journey takes us!
—Caitlin Boros, Senior Editor
When two talented friends invited me to be an editor and contributor at Anew Traveller, I was honoured to have the opportunity to work with others who share my passion for discovering the world.
In the last year, Anew has given so many travellers a voice to tell of their adventures around the globe. Collectively, these voices have fostered an openness for the world we live in, centred around passion, creativity and inspiration.
Happy one year to Anew Traveller!

1. Top 10 Travel Books to Read in 2015
We didn’t just pick our own favourites for this list, we consulted the biggest travel lovers we know, those who read more than anyone else we know, and those who travel obsessively. The result is an amazingly diverse list with everything from the best classics to the most exciting new reads, all designed to open your eyes and inspire you. If you’ve got some travel lovers on your holiday gift list, this is the perfect place to start for a gift they’ll treasure.
2. My Great Escape: Forging a New Life in Paris
For my first article on Anew, I wanted to explore the concept of escape. In reflecting on the time I spent living abroad in Paris, I hoped fellow travellers could relate to the notion of escapism, and how it pulls at us most strongly when dissatisfied with the daily routine. In so many ways, travel is escape, whether it be for a few days, weeks, or years. No matter where we dash off too or for how long, travel provides a unique opportunity to re-connect with oneself. We look forward to continuing to share our “stories of escape” on Anew in the year ahead! —Caitlin
3. An Ode to Bicycles: The Perfect Travel Companion
While this article was titled as an “ode”, it really could be described as a love story. My affair with cycling has grown steadily since I first hopped on a bike seat while living abroad in the Netherlands. Whether it’s been years since you’ve placed your feet on a pedal or you’re a seasoned pro, a bicycle is truly an ideal travel companion with whom you are sure to discover new places, people and sights that would have otherwise gone unseen. Next time you travel, give it a try! —Caitlin
4. Rediscovering Italy Through Wine
Storytelling is a wonderful gift, one this guest author certainly has. Here, a tale tracing back to years of childhood is intertwined with the challenges of living abroad. In sharing a story from years past alongside his grandfather in the Langhe region of northern Italy, the author is able to transcend time and circumstance through a single object: wine. —Caitlin
5. Why a Long-Distance Trek is a Great Travel Experience
Travelling is not just about the places we visit or the adventures we check off our bucket list, it’s about the lessons we learn along the way. My excursion into the Sahara desert was one of the most challenging experiences, but I learned so many important lessons on that journey. I was thrilled by the opportunity to share that story on Anew Traveller, with the hopes that it may inspire others to embark on a long distance trek too. —Victoria
6. The Italian Alps: A Mosaic of Landscapes
In one small corner of the Alps, there seems to be more geographical diversity than across all of Ontario. It only takes a few short hikes in the Italian Alps to begin to notice each trail’s stunning particularities. In this article, I share 5 of my favourite spots in the Italian Alps and explain exactly why they are so unique. —Victoria
7. The Age Debate: Is there a “right” time to travel?
Although I’ve attempted to travel as much as possible in the last few years, “life” (read: school, jobs, funds) sometimes got in the way of that. In her article on “The Age Debate”, Caitlin calmed my FOMO, or fear of missing out, and reminded me that travel has no age limits. While our experiences will always be shaped by our age, the “right” time to travel is anytime. —Victoria
8. Blind Man Conquers Machu Picchu Marathon in Just One Day
When I found out about this amazing feat I knew we had to tell Dan Berliner’s story. It’s people and stories like this that remind us how amazing the world can be, and inspire us to embark on our own challenges and adventures. Stories like this are why we started Anew Traveller a year ago, and why we love it today! —Nicola
9. Discover Southern France’s Ancient Underworld
Here we have a great revelation of something you wouldn’t expect to find in southern France, a region full of foie gras, truffles, chateaus and wine: a deep underground cave with some of the most spectacular natural limestone sculptures in the world. It’s also very personally significant: I’ve visited this eerie cave more times than I can count, and it’s still just as powerful every time. It’s a place where I can slow down, calm down, and reflect. It’s one of those place you have to see for yourself to understand. —Nicola
10. A Journey to the Heart of Siberia
We strive to bring you stories that reveal the essence of a destination in a unique way or through a particularly compelling lens. Griffith’s journey to the “heart” of Siberia on the Trans-Siberian railway is a perfect example of such a rich and unforgettable experience. Some of the most memorable moments come from friendships formed on the road and small gestures that stick in your mind. Griffith’s personal journey adds so much intriguing depth to this piece. It’s moments like his intimate encounter on the train that fuel our passion for travel. —Nicola
