Journey to The End of the World
Situated at the southern tip of South America, just a thousand kilometers away from the icy land of Antarctica, lies Ushuaia, otherwise known as The End of the World, or El Fin Del Mundo. Ushuaia is in the Patagonia region of Argentina, right along the Chilean border, and is infamous for being the most southernmost city in the world.
Arriving in Ushuaia
As you emerge from the small airport you will be greeted by the fresh smell of the sea and giant, snowcapped mountains. The weather can vary a great deal, from blustery winds to calm sunshine and long days during the summer months followed by short, dark days in the winter months. You never know what type of weather you will wake up to and visitors must always be prepared for delayed, or even cancelled, flights when travelling to this part of the world.
Meeting the Tuxedos
One of the most memorable experiences in Ushuaia is taking a boat ride to visit the penguins. Braving the rough waters of the Beagle Channel, the tour includes a stop at Bird’s Island, where hundreds of penguin-look-a-like birds cover a giant rock shared with sea lions, plus a quick stop at the famous Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse. As the boat approaches Penguin Island, the penguins waddle up to the shore to cautiously inspect the new visitors as the boat comes to an abrupt halt. Hundreds of penguins cover the island, rolling around the ground, diving into the frigid ocean and waddling around from group to group. If you’re lucky you can spot King Penguins watching suspiciously as they keep an eye over their clan of adorable creatures. You might find yourself wishing you could have a penguin for a pet!
Exploring the Area
Another must is hiking through the forest in Tierra del Fuego National Park. Situated by a lake and surrounded by mountains, the scenery is stunning from every angle. Through the maze of trees and along the sandy beaches, visitors can enjoy the sites of the Patagonian forest and silence of the quiet land. There are a variety of interesting plants that are unique to the Patagonia region, accompanied by the sounds of new creatures mixed with the roar of harsh winds.
Enjoy being Oceanside
Situated right on the ocean, Ushuaia is a seafood lover’s dream come true! Visitors will find different varieties of crab cooked in many different sauces at the various seafood restaurants situated along the water. Argentina is also well known for its delicious meats, which can also be found in this southern part of the country, and there’s no lack of alfajores!
Traveling to The End of the World is truly a unique experience. It’s a rare opportunity to venture across the hemispheres, through sometimes harsh climates, and experience a land so foreign and far away. With its rich history, rustic landscapes, distinctive creatures, delicious seafood and stunning scenery, Ushuaia is one destination you will never forget!
