An Unforgettable Visit to Ohrid, Macedonia
For travelers with only a handful of destinations checked on their wish list, popular tourist destinations bring all sorts of excitement. However, it takes a worn passport to recognize how true adventure can happen where you least expect it. Hidden from magazine lists, there are many countries waiting to be explored.

Located in the largely forgotten part of South Eastern Europe, the Balkan Peninsula is home to several nation states of the former Yugoslav federation. This article, which I consider a guide of sorts, will familiarize you with one of them, Macedonia, which as the smallest of the pack is indeed a hidden gem.

Painted with picturesque valleys, steep canyons and formidable mountain terrain, the country of Macedonia is a true heaven for any outdoor aficionado. And if you have to settle for a single location, while still enjoying the full scope of the Macedonian experience, there is no better place than the small town of Ohrid. Conveniently located on the shore of Lake Ohrid, it blends together both culture and nature in what is truly a kaleidoscope run wild.

With more than 200 endemic species, Lake Ohrid preserves a unique aquatic system. Being one of the oldest and certainly deepest European lakes, it is a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourists, however, will be most enticed by the lake’s breathtaking scenery and awe-inspiring panoramic views.
Ohrid, for the better part of the year, enjoys a tepid climate. Summer is the ideal season for booking a vacation, but spring is also enjoyable for visitors not especially interested in sunbathing. The coast provides a variety of natural settings, from small and off-road beaches, to grandiose panoramic lookouts. Every place worth visiting is just a few miles away from one another. Packed with unforgettable scenery, in such a small radius, Ohrid sets the standard for an attractive tourist destination.

The spiritual center of Macedonia
Once home to 365 churches and monasteries, Ohrid is still the religious center of Macedonia. Some churches disappeared with time, while others gradually transformed into artisan workshops, art galleries, and classical music recital podiums. A large number of sites, however, are still active.
Intertwined with nature, the churches and monasteries of Ohrid exemplify the Macedonian archetype – natural and spiritual, in a perfect blend together. Some stunning examples are the churches of Kaneo, Plaoshnik, and the monastery complex of Saint Naum. Adventurous visitors can also try jumping in the crystal blue waters of the lake from the cliff formation below Kaneo.

What to do in Ohrid?
Ohrid is first and foremost a coastal town, so not visiting the beaches would be near sacrilegious. Visit Trpejca, the Gradište complex, Saint Naum, Kaneo, and explore as many hidden gems along the road as you can. Many are secluded enough to give visitors the impression they’re the only ones around!

Any tour agency will gladly take visitors to the magnificent location of the Ohrid springs, where captivating scenery will leave guests humbled. Followed by a spiritual tour of the monastery complexes and a calm afternoon under the sun, it’s certainly a day to remember.
The Gradište camp is where most of the fun happens during the month of August, and is a great spot for visitors interested in beach festivals, hip music, and a vibrant nightlife. It is also calm and serene during the morning (while most are still asleep), providing access to one of the most popular attractions – the Bay of Bones. A small pile-dwelling settlement reconstructed only recently, it is indeed a sight to behold.

The nearby mountain of Galicica provides hours of outdoor fun, with hiking trails that stretch from miles and challenging biking trails that cut through the dense forest. The top of the mountain, however, is where true magic happens – with a clear and unobstructed view of the vast terrain surrounding Galicica, visitors can see the lakes of Ohrid and Prespa in their full glory.
Ohrid has no shortage of cultural and historical offerings. One great example of this is Samuil’s fortress, a relic of the Byzantine era that overlooks the city. Many social and cultural influences from this time are still deeply embedded into Ohrid traditions.

Visiting Ohrid for the first time is a truly unforgettable experience. With the unique combination of stunning scenery, tradition and cultural heritage, it is a vacation unlike any other. Add good company and delicious Macedonian cuisine, and you’ll never want to leave.
