5 Ways to Relive Your Travels
Life gets busy. And while for any traveller journeys abroad will always remain a priority, sometimes you simply don’t have the ability to get away and go somewhere new. During times like these – when I’m feeling the intense pull of wanderlust – I rely on nostalgia to get me through. Tapping into the old memory bank is a great way to relive journeys past. Here’s a few suggestions for how to reminisce – and feed that travel hunger.
Delve into the Archives
Friends and family members were likely initially very interested in hearing about your trip and seeing all of your photos. However, months or years after the fact, spending a good chunk of time revisiting it with you may not be something they’re exactly keen on. That said, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t (and in fact, why you shouldn’t!) take a walk down memory lane on your own.
Break into those old digital albums! Take a look through every photo, taking time to remember the place it was, what you ate, the people you met there. Watch the videos. Laugh over that one shot of you that just perfectly captures the essence of the trip. Going through old photos is also a good opportunity to consider making a photo book or other memento that you can keep around the house – for future nostalgia moments.
Eat! Mmmm…
One of the highlights of every trip I take abroad is trying the local cuisine. The unique combinations and flavours stick with me long past the visit, and often I’ll find myself craving them back home. Fortunately, in today’s globalized world, we have access to ingredients from across the globe. While it may never taste exactly like what you remember, recreating dishes from your travels is a great way to reminisce. Â So, think of one of your favourite eats from your travels, find a recipe, and get cooking!
Reconnect With Fellow Travellers
Whether you journeyed solo or with someone, reconnecting with people with shared travel memories is a great way to relive those experiences. These people are just like you – they have an incredible memory of a place that they’d love to talk about. Whether it’s simply asking an old friend to dinner or chatting with a travel buddy across the world on Skype, reliving those moments with someone will feel almost as fulfilling as when you first experienced them.
Take Yourself Back
While you may not be able to physically revisit a place from your travels, you can venture back there through a different medium. Watch a film set in the locale, and see it with new eyes. Or read a book that takes place there, discovering how new characters interact with their surroundings. Listen to music, and re-familiarize yourself with the sounds or language of that special place. Though it’s not quite the same as going back, experiencing a destination through a different lens will only add to your great appreciation for it.
Write a Travel Blog Article
Though I may be slightly biased, I’ve found that writing about your travels is truly one of the most fulfilling ways to relive them. Now, I’m not recommending you jump down the nostalgia rabbit hole and immediately start your own travel blog. There are hundreds of great travel blog sites out there, and many (including this one!) accept submissions from guest authors. So think about an article you’d really like to write and propose the idea to a few blog publications. Not only do you get to write about your experience, you also get to share your knowledge with the larger travel community. Write on!
